finally

Each time the electricity goes out
and the light bulbs shut us off instead
after the quieting downward hum
some of us,
secretly
some of us,
out loud
wish that it might stay
that way
at least long enough
so that the cars run out of gas
so that there is nothing left to do
finally
but to help each other.
