This is not a poem about race
dustin burden
A secret song
But not the song of myself
I’ll hum it out loud
And hope you’ll understand
I heard it when my buddy said
Scratching off the Acrylic artfully smudged on his shirt
That he’s a painter and its ok for him
I heard it when somebody said that’s just how we are.
I heard it when I moved out and learned to cook rice
never looks like there’s enough water
Or its Spilling of over
Sizzling on the burner
I heard it because there is a cock between my legs
And I figured it would be best to be ashamed of it.
I got this secret song
But it’s a manifesto
I lied ok
But
fuck
the narrative.
Subtract the rhetoric
And I think all I have is insecurity
Of being white
This poem hopes not to have offended any person of any persuasion and would like now to prove beyond all doubt that whatever imposed readings are entirely false
