The Thing That Sits

Stephen Long

O! To be a thing that sits!
The thing that sits is never tired,
Never bored or uninspired.
The thing that sits is always right
And sleeps by day and rests by night.
The thing that sits is you and me!
Imagine that! You can't, I see.
In that case then, imagine this!
I am donkey, you are fish.
And O! How we each long to be
Wet and dry respectively!
To be a joke that no-one gets!
O! To be a thing that sits!
