Sad Poem
Matthew Guariglia
Why should we want to live in a world
Where a mother can walk past the room where her children once practiced their little violins
But since that dark fateful night------they play cello.
A world where a father can sneak into his daughter’s room
And as she lays peacefully, pretending to sleep
Puts his rough hands on her face and says
“Are you all right? You seemed a little upset at dinner.”
Where old women weep while looking over
The empty chair at the kitchen table
Because she is cutting onions
And her husband is still, playing golf
A cruel world where wives bellow into the insubordinate night
As she finds lipstick in her husbands over night bag
And realizes she can no longer
Pull off that color
