Out Gray Nullity
David Howerton
Lifting turning change frown into smile.
Seek an hour or three in woods surrounded
conifer and oak
sound of hawks circling
and deer sneaking through trees
trying to be unseen while eating.
Gift of moving quiet
through second growth forest
that has finally worn edge from mining scars
a hundred & fifty years old.
A slight change comes
they replaced turkeys now
everyday you hear them wandering
looking for food and in evening
the long pause as they get up nerve
to fly across highway 49 down to their nesting place.
Turns a long day a little happier
removing some sadness
giving a tiny touch of growth
to heart digging out gray nullity.
