Every Once in a While During the Summer
Slim Walter DeTurtlevain
Every once in a while
During the summer
Or occasionally spring
I go to the closet
Or occasionally the bookcase
And pull out a rubber balloon
Red balloons are my favorites
I inflate the balloon
Using my mouth
Or occasionally my nose
A quick knot
Or occasionally two
And I toss it into the air
Or occasionally rub it on my head
To make lightning, my own personal kind
Sitting and smiling, I laugh
My balloon soars lazily
Entertaining me an hour
Or occasionally a whole day
But I will lose interest
Or occasionally grow angry
With my newest toy
Or occasionally life
And the balloon will meet a tack
Or occasionally a knife
Greeting death with an audible "bang"
I can never get too attached
But
Every once in a while
During the summer
Or occasionally spring
A balloon catches my eye
Or occasionally my heart
I put away a tack
Or occasionally a knife
I decide to spare this balloon
Or occasionally forget I ever do otherwise
I go to the closet
Or occasionally the bookcase
And set it there to grow old
I relish the knowledge that it will not outlive me.
