Chlorine in the Jean Pule
Good Poet
When my mother tells me,
“you’re selfish and greedy”,
when she stores hoards of cakes and sweets in her bedroom,
that she bought with her unemployment benefits,
I’m thankful.
When my father tells me,
“I don’t know who shot JFK”,
when I didn’t ask if he did,
and would never assume he could ever have obtained such information,
I’m thankful.
When my brother and sister tell me nothing,
because they don’t exist,
because my mother and father never conceived them,
even though they have repeatedly told me how much they would have liked to,
I’m thankful.
I’m thankful,
because at least I know my parents.
But mostly,
I’m thankful that nobody else has to.
